What goes into a gate
A gate is the most load-bearing part of a fence. Unlike a line post, a gate post holds a swinging leaf, so it takes the leaf's weight plus leverage and wind. That is why gate posts get a bigger footing and heavier hardware than the rest of the run.
- Leaf / kit — the gate panel itself; drive gates use two leaves plus a drop rod.
- Hinge + latch posts — two posts per gate, sized up for load.
- Concrete — volume-based, with a wider hole than a line post.
- Hardware set — hinges, latch and, for wide gates, a drop rod assembly.
Worked example (wood walk gate)

Width matters
Gates under 6 ft can usually use a standard single leaf. From 8 ft up you are into double-leaf territory: two leaves, a centre drop rod to hold the closed leaf, and heavier posts. This is a planning estimate — always confirm hardware ratings and post sizes with your supplier and local code.
