How Many Fence Panels Do I Need?
Short answer: subtract gate openings from the run, divide by the panel width, and round up — you can't buy half a panel. A 200 ft fence with one 4 ft gate and 8 ft panels needs 25 panels.
The formula
Panels = ceil((run length − gate openings) ÷ panel width). One panel fits per bay between posts; the post count follows the panels for pre-assembled systems, or the spacing for board-built wood.
Worked example
- Run: 200 ft, one 4 ft walk gate → effective 196 ft
- Panel width: 8 ft → 196 ÷ 8 = 24.5 → round up to 25 panels
- Posts: 25 spans + 1 end post + 2 gate posts = 28 posts
- Ground gap reminder: panels are set 2–4 in above grade — that gap is not part of the panel count.
Sloped yards: stepped vs racked
On a slope, pre-assembled panels either step down in stairs (stepped — small gaps under each panel) or rack (pivot within the posts, if the system allows). Stepped installs can waste panel coverage, so measure each sub-run separately — the linear feet calculator lets you add sections per yard segment.

The Fence Panel Calculator does the rounding for you, and the material calculator adds posts, rails and concrete on top.
FAQ
How many 8 ft panels for 200 ft?
196 effective ft ÷ 8 = 24.5 → 25 panels.
Can I cut a vinyl panel to fit?
Generally no — routed systems rely on exact geometry. Plan the last bay to absorb the remainder or order a custom width.
Do gates count as panels?
No — the gate opening is removed from the run first, and gates are ordered as leaves with hinge/latch posts.
